Mooryaan was coined by the Afweyne to describe the USC rebel fighters.
Mooryaan means rash (heat rash). In 1989, the USC rebels started a guerrilla campaign hitting military installations, police stations and causing a lot of problems for the Afweyne regime. Siyaad was annoyed by the hit and run attacks that occured on a daily basis from with in Xamar to Hiiraan.
He called these rebels, "mooryaan" because they were like a rash:
1. Unexpected
2. Irritating
3. Don't know where or when it will strike
My older brothers, cousins and uncles were the part of the original "Mooryaans" who fought from Galkacyo to Villa Somaliya in 1989 to 1991.
FYI: Barre's Last Meal was Baasto, Suugo, Moos, and Hilib Aari. He never had the chance to eat it.
My brother indicated that the meal was tasty.

There are other terms for robbers/thieves:
Buurcad
Tuug
The term mooryaan has been misused and abused just like the term for another Somali rebel group, the SHIFTA of NFD.
Shifta went from being a name for the Somali rebel fighters fighting for the liberation of NFD to being by the Kenyatti regime to mean thieves.
VIVA MOORYAAN ! VIVA SHIFTA !

Mooryaan maaha wax lagu faani karo. Magacanna maaha wax soo baxay 1991 ee waa kelmad weligeed jirtey. Falkoodana maaha wax cidi micno qurux badan u samayn karto. Ninkii raba inuu ogaado waxa ay Mooryaani tahay ha jaleeco Xamar. That is the harsh truth. Let us not kid ourselves.
Mooryaanimo waa wax Ilaah laga magan galo. Mooryaanku qabiil ma yaqaano, dal iyo dad midna ma yaqaano. Waa kuwa haddeer ah "Hit Man", ciddii doonta ayaa adeegsata.
Cabdi wahaabow, haddii adiga laguusoo diro, way ku toogan.
