Ibn Saalix had no clue what was going on in Somalia. The entire somali tribes, except a few, were allied either with the british, the ethiopians, or the italians.
Even his own tribe, the majority (maxamed subeer) were gainst him and even tried to kill him. They invited him for counsel trying to ambush him, and so knowing their treachery his sent out Abbas, one of his favorite colonels that look like him. THe maxamed subeer then killed Cabbas thinking they had killed the Sayyid until later they found out he was still alive.

To pay back, he told them that they were his "Children" and wronged, and that he had forgiven them for their wrong doings. The gullible ones attended a grand ceremony in which majority of them had their hands and feet cut off and left in the wilderness. Waxaa loo bixiyey kala kicii iyo gurdumi.

Later, the Sayyid tried to make peace with them knowing he needed fighters. He sent out 70 of his men on peace delegation from Eyl and all 70 were killed and thrown in a well in the ogaden heartland.

So his "takfiirism" had to do with the hypocritical nature of the somali tribes who allied whomever they thought was stronger and care little for Islam.

Is there a biography about Sayidka that includes the intricate details you've mentioned?

he's was a kind of sufi but the kind that would be unrecognisable to today's docile mushrik sufis. in fact back then he's hostile to the dominate somali sufi order for being docile and kuffar lackeys like today's sufis. nonetheless, without taking anything from his jihad, he's was still a sufi; and, as such, practised bidah.
