persia was one of the richest parts of the world, and also far from the control of the conservative ulema,
the same with andalusia the maghreb and parts of syria.
Iraq had the same standard of living as the persian speaking parts, it even had more schools and universities but it did not produce much science?
it could do with the higher density of conservative ulema?
who knows?

But after the mongol catastrophe and the reconquista only the conservative ulema survived as everyone else was exterminated and refugee ulema from iraq flooded egypt and their rivals were exterminated in persia and andalus.
combined with the destruction of the economy these factors were the reason for the fall of islamic civilization.

Hydrogen, I do not hold a grudge against Europe, to my surprise I commend it for it's ability to run rings around the Muslim world over the last 200 years. The deterioration of the unity of Muslims was necessary in the build up to what is now the western empire, this empire that surrounds itself in consumerism and over-consumption of the earth's resources has a parable, it is like that of a cake with it's exterior beautifully decorated but it's interior rotten.

What this means is many people lack in-depth perception and only perceive what they see to be the truth, when there is a lot more to the truth beyond that, the theme of the Qur'an is " Don't be deluded by the beauty of the world, it is merely a delusion and a temporal abode", I find that the standards of living given to us by the west does everything in it's ability to pull people into this sub-concious delusion where they think this is heaven on earth. I second on what gurey said, the rank of the scholars we have today in comparison to the scholars of Islam's golden age have a huge stark contrast in of which the scholars today being those that are inferior, and this has it's repercussions, people are responding to this by a; not being satisfied with islam, b; making their own interpretations of the religion, and c; taking the fatwa's of some of these ludicrous scholars and using them as an example to the world of what Islam calls to.

The disarrangement of the Muslim world was intentionally done when the British Empire in all it's might did everything to abolish the caliphate (with the help of subordinate arabs), as a faithful believer I am hopeful that Islam will retain it's rightful ownership of it's land as it once has, for a Muslim not to have hope and to have discontent with that is a troubled Muslim, because what that does is displays that Muslim's appreciation for the polar opposite civilization that has emerged over the last 100 years, such a Muslim has to return to Allah level-headed and ask for help before they completely consider the liberation of Muslim lands distasteful.

Does this mean I roam the streets of London with a frown upon my face? No, I recognise this is not my land of origin, and so I find the bands that parade crying for Sharia Law to be quite ignorant, the 'fort' that is the Muslim world has been invaded and raided yet they are outside of it calling the world to Islam, how can a man who doesn't know how to swim save those that are drowning? He would surely drown himself.
