The world is getting smaller, populations are getting bigger and resources will soon be depleted. That is not a time for a weak Somali state to be experimenting with different forms of goverments.

Democracy doesn't work for a poor, underdeveloped african nation - let alone one that can't even maintain it's territorial integrity. In the future inshallah when the country is stable and prosperous, then we can maybe start to devolve power and grant states more autonomy. But right now Somalia needs a powerful centralized government under a srong leader.
A powerful centralized government under a strong leader? Somalia had that. The government was called Dawladdii Kacaanka. It's leader was Jaalle Maxamed Siyaad Barre. Furthermore, your very own clansmen were well represented in all the top positions. YET, you apparently rose up against it. Fastfoward 25 years...surprisingly here you are advocating for what Somalia once had, "a powerful centralized government under a strong leader".
Lol, how cute. Run along and play outside now. The adults are talking.

As long as a leader will be judged and seen from the prism of qabiil, we ran out of solutions. How about if we men give it up altogether, take a backseat and let the smart Somali women lead us from the front and out of this quagmire that we find ourselves in. I think they will apply a rational, workable and better solution to our terminal cancer that is plaguing us all. We failed ourselves, families, communities and even our own clans, therefore let us ask them to fill in and lead us to a brighter and better future.

If you think that the deep social ills that exist in Somali society can be "fixed" by switching the genders of those in charge, then you're in for a rude awakening. That's a very naive line of thinking.

Somalia needs a meritocracy, and we won't get there by playing identity politics through gender.

Ina Adeer, you are absolutely right that Somalia needs 'meritocracy', qabiil politics to cease, but the brutal fact is it won't happen because we are deeply obsessed with our tribal identity and see politics, society and relationships from that prism. Since our culture is paternalistic and we as men have failed, it is not farfetched to suggest to let the women take the mantle. I'm not saying they will succeed but I believe they are our last hope. Give them a chance.

True that woman have been working hard while we have been fighting. No doubt they will be better leader than us.

However will the situation treat a woman leader nicely?

Tribal elders won't accept her. Al-Shabaab won't accept her because "it's haram brah". Neighbours will laugh at her. Arab nations will refuse to deal with her.

Is this what we really want? In order to gain peace, you need to give the allies and enemies a reason to trust you.

Why do Lamagoodle's threads always get a sticky? I swear his two of his teenage girl diaries were stickies too. His he a mod and makes his own threads stickies? Always with his self important, desperate for attention ramblings...The title alone makes me cringe.

Ina Adeer, the so called "qabiil elders" have never been so relevant in our past history than today's Somalia. They will like to maintain the status quo to maintain this relevancy. They will never accept not only women leaders, but a solution to be found for our predicament. Somalis will never accept a female president, so we are only discussing it on the abstract level. The Arabs have accepted former Prime minister Benazir Bhutto and Bangladesh's current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

@Machiavelli- Nether Benazir Bhutto nor Hasina are arabs they are both from the Indian subcontinent.why should somalis people accept a women president when America ,China, nor Russia never had a women President, being a leader should be about whom the people trust and vote in instead of the idea that you have a certain preference for a female, this says more about your and like people whom are on ideological campaign to see transformation of society that feeds you view of the world. Also both Sheikha Hasina and Banazir Bhutto are from ruling dynasties in their home countries. sheik Hasina is the oldest daughter of the founding father of Bangaldesh so her family has ruled their country since the beginning and her son/daughter will continue and the same with Benazir who comes from the most prestigious political familiy clan in Pakistan the Bhuttos , with many presidents and prime ministers the last being her 19 old Oxbridge educated son belaliwal as chairman for the PPP party family founded and held sine the late 70s in a country of 200 Millions. You can not in any way say those people holding power as some kind female empowerment in their countries, as those family names have nothing to do with the average citizens female, and male alike. They are more royals than anytime else. So I ask again why some should be voted in just because of their gender . It should about who can make progress and peace and have the democratic political majority to rule.

Ina Adeer, what is the point of mentioning that Hasina & Benazir are Asians? I was responding to someone who mentioned that Arab leaders won't deal with a Somali female president. If we invented tribalism and it's fake glory, passion, and obsession, then we can also invent female Somali royalty that could lead us out of this abyss. In my humble opinion, we men failed Somalia, let's try promoting Fadumo iyo Canbaro to the highest office by either dictatorial or democratic methods. Any means Somalis decide.

It isn't about "man" vs "woman". That's what you fail to understand. It's about who's best-fitted to lead Somalia out of our shitty situation. Leaders such as Margaret Thatcher, Hillary Clinton, and Indira Gandhi were no better than the men who preceded them. You're supposed to find the best leader---whether it's a male or female---and then go from there. If it happens to be a woman, then so be it. But it shouldn't be like we Somalis should be checking a quota box to make sure every demographic group is represented in the leadership.

Nothing we post here is going
to save Somalia. At best, it would have
a functioning government in Banadir and all
other federal states will govern itself or keep fighting
Alshabab.
