From my personal observation of Somalis in the Diaspora, which can be construed as a personal theory, several factors explain as to why some groups have easily integrated into a culture very much different than their own. First, it is the demography--differences in ages, gender, and etc. Group1, the older ones have enough experiences and hold entrenched views about their belief system and culture. This group is very hard to alter their belief system , languages , custom and norms regardless of how long they happen to stay or live overseas. They could be educated, semi-educated or illiterate. The Second group (22-30 is those whose educational and cultural foundation were at least enough to grasp differences or to make the distinction between "Us" vs "them". This group retains part of their culture and find ways to adopt part of the host society's culture, but they underestimate the host culture in reality and overestimate theirs as very important one. They are also excited about personal growth by knowing the history, civilization, and culture of the host society and acquiring knowledge that would be of importance to their lives. Nervous and enthusiastic in the first five years, they finally understand the whole system of the country and settle with what they have achieved. The third group (10-19) is the minor group. This group puts the burden on the parents. They hardly understand what is expected of them or their background. They only communicate with nothing but the language of the host society exactly the way it is. I don't disagree with that as there is no other way to opt out of the school system, which mandates that only English be taught . The Spanish community once lobbied for bilingual system, but it was denied and the English Immersion Program was introduced afterwards that none other than English can be taught in the school. This group, therefore, is an easy target of the negative influences of the subculture like the Hip-Hop. They also despise their own culture extremely as backward because of the effect of conformity (changing your behavior, attitude to gain acceptance into a particular group). Somalis of the last group lack high-involvement decision, a decision that requires extended time of thinking, examining, and evaluating with your loved ones before it is to make. Like the girl who bypassed the advice of her parents before she married the black man, she falls into the last group.
