I have seen this before, but it does seem to help keep things in perspective:

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S. , and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more
Heavily populated than California .

With a mere 1.4 million people, California was only the 21st
Most populous state in the Union .

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower !

The average wage in the U.S. Was 22 Cents per hour.

3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke


The American flag had 45 stars.
Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and
Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.

The population of Las Vegas , Nevada , was only 30!!!!

There were about 230 reported Murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A . !

Somalia is at a very similar state.... Roads, schools, profession avg salaries etc are what america was like 100 yrs ago.

These stats are not real but based on superficial estimates to distinguish past from the present.

I posted this before, but I think most of you probably missed it:


My monthly living allowance in 1966 was $100. That was something less than 800 shillings.

I paid my cook 100 shillings a month. Meat was 1 shilling per kilo for any cut you wanted. Eggs were kumi-kumi. "Italian" eggs (from big, white chickens) were kumi-tano. The trip by bus from Jilib to Kismayo was five shillings, one way. The only Isbaro I ever saw in the country was at Kumsumma. Somali women covered their hair with a scarf or tied on a piece of cloth I think was called a guntino. I never saw a hijab.
