Worker stole to pay for boyfriend
A trainee tax accountant has been jailed for stealing £34,000 from her employer to pay her boyfriend's debts.
Yinka Saunders, 24, stole the cash from PricewaterhouseCoopers to cover a £40,000 credit card bill run up by her partner, the Old Bailey was told.

The east London law graduate siphoned off the money by entering false travel taxi and train expenses over 10 months from December 2005.

She was jailed for six months after earlier admitting one count of theft.

Full of fear

She had submitted false travel claims up to £250 to places such as Cardiff, Basingstoke and Milton Keynes, the court heard.

Michael Mulkerrins, prosecuting, said Saunders had a relatively junior position with PricewaterhouseCoopers.

He said she got herself into debt and had an older boyfriend with expensive tastes, whom her parents disapproved of.

Mr Mulkerrins said Saunders hoped to make a career in tax consultancy but now this "may well be in jeopardy".

Michael Hall, defending, said Saunders was "full of fear and foreboding" about the prospect of going to jail.

He said she was "contrite and tearful" and was an intelligent young woman with a 2:1 law degree from Southampton University.

Judge Richard Hawkins said: "I am told that the purpose of your thefts was to finance the boyfriend.

"I am afraid I have not been persuaded that it is not my duty to send you to prison."
