Arranged Marriages....

Are these common within the somali community? Are any of you opposed to arranged marriages, and why?

Personally i believe that there's nothing wrong with it, after all it's down to the male or the female to decide whether she/he wants to get married to the person in question. And your parents/friends wouldn't introduce you to someone they didn't think was worthy of you would they?

I know one or two females who ran away from their respective families because of them being forced to marry someone they didn't want (so they say), but does it not say in the Qura'an that you can't force someone to get married against their will?

They are not very common but they still do happen. The staggering number of single moms would probably have been reduced if arranged marriage was practiced more often in the somali community.

Arranged marriages may or may not work.

I mean, if your gonna force someone to marry someone else esp in the world we live in today...it is not going to work.
However, if the couple is introduced by the families and leave it up to the couple to decide wheather or not they want to peresue a marriage then its completely fine.

Personally, I dont like arranged marriages. I dont have the apetite for them.

I think we need to have more arranged marriages. Somali parents really dont go out of their way looking for suitable husbands/wives for their children...and when those children find someone who the parents deem unsuitable..all hell breaks loose.

The parents are not the ones who are gonna be spending the rest of their lives with, having children with and being comitted.....so why should they chose?
And most parents who opt for arranged marriage do it for the socioeconomic reasons not for Islam.

Also people..please make a distinction between arranged marriages where family and f riends act as matchmakers and forced marriages.

The son or daughter have no say whatsoever in a forced marriage.

Not necessarily. I have seen arranged marriages fail and sometimes it leads to adultery. Marriage is not an easy thing but it can also be very very simple and easy.. do you get my drift? I think reason why marriages fail is due to the lack of the following: respect, comfort, communication, tolerance, understanding, companionship and love. This is what keeps people still in love for a very long time.

Now, when a Farax and Xalimo get married and have only the following: 'in love' and 'demands', as result you will have single parents. Perfect combination for disaster. People don't understand that eventually in this case they do run out of love.

Marriage is not strictly about "love" The love ends quickly when reality sets in. Get the duco of your parents before you marry.
