The prophet was once in his house and they was a father and his kid sleeping there, the kid was darker then his father and ppl thought it wasn't his kid, they use to gossip about it! I think it was Zaid bin Harith! Then a man from a tribe that are expert in genealogy or ppl's appearances come in --he saw the father and the kid's feet only, and the rest of the body was covered with sheet, so he said "these two feet belong each other or begot each other"
The prophet scw felt very happy about it --and he told Aisha --u know what Mr. so and so said, that the father and kid feet belong each other !

So the prophet was happy about the man using his expertise in ppl's appearance to tell that they are son and father, so for legitimate reasons --like identifying your kid, it's permissable!
for father info, inquire at your nearest mosque! good luck, God knows best!

To my knowledge, I don't think it's haram, knowing where you're ancestors came from. If anything I think it's permitted to do so in Islam, due to the fact that there's no mystify in knowing you're family tree.
