You mean infidelity, right sis?
My close friend is Christian, her parents have been married for 40 years now, and they've never cheated on each other. They're not practicing Christians, either. At the end of the day it comes down to the individual. I know plenty of non-Muslims who are in committed long term relationships, and marriages. Lets not paint them all with the same brush.

Its no longer just a gaalo thing, but rather a trend.
A new custom.

Thank you, Firefly.
I am not sure sequential monogamy is any worse than sequential polygamy. There is always that story of the old MJ man who claimed to have been married 120 times!

Re: i don't get why gaalo folks bother getting married
Could it be that marriage is a pure-pecuniary matter 2 them. A way 2 secure themselves from being cheated on, maltreated and chucked without getting an asset and a plus point in return!. It's easy 2 walk out of the door in "G/f-B/F" affairs, but a close union/wedlock involves financial engagements and should be thought about considerably......

Re: i don't get why gaalo folks bother getting married
The girl has a point there my friend. In our Muslim-society, we get married 2 actually form a family, and enjoy some sort of legitimate bond with the opposite sex. Nevertheless, the Gaalos/Non-Muslims (as she described them) initiates sexual-affairs without tying the knot, and on that line form a family. So, her Q was directed at that sense. If they established a family, and enjoyed every aspect of it without walking down the aisle. Why would they hold a wedding ceremony, while they already structured their life like a married couples? 4 memory purposes!!!. Oh plz ....Megatron wrote:This has to be the most dumb assed thing i've seen written here.
Is like residing with ur G/F 4 about 5 years, having kids and sharing the same apartment without getting hitched. In later term, u decide 2 marry her!!!. Why? and What difference other than that "marriage statement" does it make?......
Re: i don't get why gaalo folks bother getting married
So you see a big difference then, when contrasted with a Somali man who impregnates his wife of the moment 5 times, then cuts out and divorces her in order that he may marry a fresh one ? Personally, I don't see a diff. In fact, I consider that worse.

Well, I think there's a difference, and I stated it in my previous post. (Add the fact, the kid is confused fatherless-bastard in the former scenario, but normal toddler in the latter). Read below:

even though I hate to admit it, i'd have to agree with megatron. Did we forget the somali single mother problem. Btw, i've heard and know of many somalis both men and women who have cheated on each other.

Re: i don't get why gaalo folks bother getting married
I know what you mean Zul.. Majority of my collegues are in 'relationships' for like 10 years and have more than one child together. My neighbour got married recently, she has twins with her long term partner for 7 years, the children are 3. They only decided to get married just for the sake of it. Marriage has become old fashioned for some it seems.

Surria....
We are not chatting about rare cases and single moms trend can't be contrasted 2 this one, given that most of the Somali femmes who are labelled as Single-Mothers are actually married women. Conversely, they fabricate stories 2 gain their revenue throughout welfare-cheques system. Although, I think its wide of the mark, and against our religious conviction - that's beside the point.......

Re: i don't get why gaalo folks bother getting married
So you guys feel that the institution of marriage itself is more important, even though the situation I outlined is more fucked up and the kids may be more fucked up, than when contrasted with a couple living out of wedlock, but raising their kids in a loving, nurturing, stable environment ?
