I was invited by the Somali government to teach English during the Sixties and have had every intention of spending my retirement there working on some agricultural, energy or construction project. That day is not today, but there was a time when Somalis knew they needed help and accepted it with notable grace.

Besides the simple humanitarian concerns, Eastern Cushites are the probable progenitors of most of the peoples who left Africa. All Caucasians descend from eight women who lived in the area of the Black Sea only 10,000 years ago. These women certainly had African ancestors, probably from the Horn. Somali zenophobia is not limited to Whites. Muslim Ethiopians are not acceptable as peacekeepers in Somalia beause they are Ethiopians. Ugandan peacekeepers are not acceptable because they aren''t Muslims. Bangladeshis, Sudanese, etc. will not be acceptable because they represent the Au or the UN or the Arab League, etc.

Those who feel all Whites (read all non-Somalis) should stay out of Somali affairs need to stop calling on the international and aid community everytime there is a security, health or food crisis. It would also help if all the qaxootis went home and stopped draining the European and North American economies.

The world has become small enough that mutual interest and concern is probably healthy. I, for one, consider it a positive development that an increasing number of Whites can tell the difference between Somalis and African Americans.

Given that the vast majority of Somalis are no longer geeljire and have entered the modern world economy, the traditional zenophobia is probably inappropriate for regional and national governments. Any new Somali government is going to have to wiork with the outside world, some of which is white. I say it is best that both sides know something about the other.

I do admit, however, that it is very Somali for Somalis to reject those who would be their friends. In this day and age, especially given the present plight of the Somali people, it is just difficult to see this in any positive light.
