Civil engineering here, I have yet to meet a Somali who does an Engineering major in real-life.

When choosing this major I doubted whether to choose this or IT.

I took one look at the Mathematics required for Engineering and had a sudden, unexplained affinity for rocks and other related materials.

The first Year is always the hardest. We started the class with 300 students and second year, 128 of them dropped out. You have to hang strong analytical aptitude to go deep in Engineering fields

SDM,

U are not the only one, mate. Few folks actually end up doing real engineering work.

I am trying to convince my nephew to end up pursuing Petrochemical Engineer instead of Geology.

The problem is the out sourcing that is taking place in the USA. I remember when I was interning I used to work with Indian guys whom most of them had PhD and they were making less then $15 an hour.

You can't compete with that. I have student loan and other things to pay, so I can not settle for less. The whole reason I majored in engineering was to make the big bucks. That was before out sourcing was the coolest thing to do.

Lately undergraduate degree does not do a thing.....go for graduate degree, that is what I'm doing and my employer pays for it...Its win win situation.

That course is crazzzzzzzzzzzzy. I had an engineering buddy that took all my math and physics classes together wow took it. I stopped at Calc 3. Lets just say I'm glad I didnt have to take it. :D

My younger sister is graduating HS next year and is looking into Engineering inshallah, particulary Chemical Eng.

Electrical Engineering.

I also had a sudden heart attack when I saw the math requirements. But I thought...if I'll be taking math throughout college, why not do something useful with it that also pays money.

...also, Electrical Engineering was the #1 highest paid college major in 2008. And I know plenty of Somali EE's.
