The Marehan didn't really come on board the UIC bandwagon until after Ethiopia invaded, and it cost them a lot of wasted effort and time in the Juba Valley from September to December that allowed the TFG and Ethiopia to fortify Baidoa, deploy an army there, and then conquer Somalia.
Had they managed to get the Marehan on board from the get go, they could have taken Baidoa in October and it would have been much more difficult for Ethiopia to defeat the UIC.
Also contrary to popular belief, most Habar Gidir were snubbed by the UIC and it was only really the Ayr who supported them, and then only until they realized the UIC wasn't a euphamism for Ayr supremacism, at which point they turned on them at the first opportunity.
The UIC depended on "true believers" of the cause, and while they are effective and determined, there just weren't enough of them.
