Waan Yaabyahay

Post by Grant »

I attended a meeting at the Convention center in San Diego this weekend and was startled at the names on many of the cabs. They all looked like brand-new Yellow Cabs, but the names were "Israel", "Eritrean", and a lot of "Shebelle". Clearly, Somalis are making their presence felt down there. If I had had more time I would have looked around for Advo.

Grant,
it's Waa Yaabanahey or Waa Yaabay. Yaabyahey sounds like you're just learning the language (well, duh of course you are) but still i consider you to be a regular somali so mistakes like that is not expected of you! :P :up:

Grant, you used the correct term but in the wrong form. "Yahay" is used to signify the third-party, male. For example "wuu yabanyahay"..he is surprised. Wuu ka xunyahay ..he is apologetic.

To make it the first person, you have to take out the "y". Waa yaabanahay..I am surprised (present tense).

Yahay = is (he, present tense)

Tahay = is (she, presen tense)

Ahay = am (first person, present tense)

You used the correct pronoun though. :up:

Wuu = he

Wey = she

Waa/n = I

I know you are not the most brightest person in the forum (in fact you are in the lowest 2% percentile) but Grant is white, American, and was a peace corp volunteer to Somalia in the 60's. :arrow:

:oops:

This is my usual stick foot in mouth and try to learn from the experience approach. In Jilib I didn't have many opportunities to learn. Somali was not yet written and we did not have even the dictionaries and grammars we have today.

Thanks guys. :mrgreen:
