TACOMA, Wash. – Police are investigating after a taxi driver was found dead on Sunday morning.

His family says 23-year-old Mohamud Ahmed is the man police found shot to death on the street outside his cab.

Ahmed's company, King Cab of Fife, says Ahmed picked up a passenger at 3:26 a.m. outside a Tacoma restaurant.

Then the car's GPS unit signaled that at about 4 a.m. the taxi stopped a couple miles away in the middle of the street, where Ahmed was killed.

King Cab owners say Ahmed's taxi was equipped with an emergency call button.

"The emergency button was working but he did not use, so maybe it happened so fast,” said Abdi Ahmed of King Cab.

Relatives say Ahmed’s father, Dhombe Afad, moved his family away from violence in Somalia and they traveled to Western Washington three years ago through a U.S. refugee program.

Ahmed had dreams of finally gaining a formal education and pursuing a career. He had driven a taxi for the last year to save money.

"The point was to rebuild his life here as a young man but now this happened," said Hersi Mohamed, Ahmed’s uncle.

His family says no one had threatened Ahmed. He had no known enemies. His senseless murder is all the more tragic for his broken father, who fled a violent situation to now lose a son to a possible random crime in a land that prides itself on freedom.

"He doesn't know what to do, his father. He doesn't know where to go what to do," said Mohamed.

Robbery may be motive in cabbie death in Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - Tacoma police say robbery appears to be the motive in the apparent homicide of a cab driver whose body was found in the street next to his cab yesterday morning.

Police spokesman Mark Fulghum said today that detectives believe the suspect or suspects fled the area on foot.

Cash was scattered over the back seat of the cab. Police have no witnesses. The cab was in the middle of the street with its engine running and lights on when an officer found it.

Fulghum says a dark-colored stocking cap with a narrow white band around the bottom edge was located in the area and may belong to the attacker. The cap had a Key Restaurant logo on the front. Police released photos of the cap to the media today.

No cause of death has been announced, but KING-TV reports that a family member said the driver had been shot to death. Family members told KING-TV that the victim was 23-year-old Mohamud Ahmed, a refugee from Somali.

The News Tribune reported Ahmed worked for King Cab Co. of Tacoma.

Police are waiting for the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office to confirm the death was a homicide. It would be the first homicide of 2009 in Tacoma.

I find it a necessity for all cabbies to have those glass Screens, however lucrative it may be to talk the ride outta their tip.

Ilaahay Ha U Naxariisto....the same thing happened in Edmonton 2 years ago to a Somali man from Ottawa who went out West to work for his wife and 7 children. Three Native Indians stabbed him while he begged for his life, and then locked him in the trunk of his cab while he was still alive. The taxi profession can be dangerous and I agree with the plexiglass protection screen.
