MOGADISHU, Somalia — A witness says a roadside bomb blast has injured Somalia's interior minister and killed one of his bodyguards.

Eyewitness Omar Abdi says the blast hit the car carrying Sheik Abdulkadir Ali Omar on Thursday morning in Mogadishu.

Abdi says the minister was slightly wounded in the leg. A second bodyguard and a bystander were also wounded. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Before his appointment, Omar led an Islamist militia that fought Ethiopian troops who occupied Somalia until their withdrawal earlier this year. Somalia's new unity government has reached out to Islamists.

Somalia has not had a functioning government since clan-based militias overthrew a socialist dictator in 1991 and then turned on each other.
