Somalia: Death toll rises after Islamist infighting in central town




MOGADISHU (Mareeg) – At least ten people were killed in and about thirty five others were wounded in fighting between two Islamist groups has killed in Beledweyn, the provincial capital of Hiran region in central Somalia, witnesses said on Monday.
Residents said fighters from two Islamist, insurgent groups-Hizbul Islam and Islamic Courts Union-fought in Hawlwadag neighborhood in the centre of the town.

The Islamic Courts Union militia in Beledweyn supports the government of Somalia while the other group Hizbul Islam militia opposes the government.



Sources said the fighting started after Hizbul Islam group opposed an order from the Islamic Courts Union which they ordered the business community to pay tax.



There has been a power struggle between the Islamists in Beledweyn recently.
