Have you been to or lived in South Africa?

In few weeks I am headed to South Africa for a month and half visit. I'm not going to the townships so I don't have to worry about what they do to Somalis but from what I read the place has some of the highest crime rates in the world especially Jo'burg. Have you lived or visited there and what is your experience especially with crime?

My dad was in Johannesburg for a goodly while. He had precious little positive to say about the place, so I'm guessing that 'rough' doesn't justly describe the place. Avoid it if you can.

The Cape however, is a different kettle of fish.

That's the thing, I can't ignore it. They call Nairobi "Nairobbery" but even though I did not like that city one bit I thought all the tips I looked at before were a bit exaggerated (then again some thief did get shot couple yards from me and couple other things). But Jo'burg is different, at least in Nairobi I did not seem like a foreigner due to the large Somali presence. What exactly did your dad say?

My best friend is a structural engineer in Johannesburg. He has lived there sine summer 07

Vo distant majeerten relatives were killed there. Word of caution, use the typical cautionary tips u would apply on usa african americans.

1. when u see a herd of adoons men, cross the street and hurry your walk pace.

2. Dont walk past 7 pm

3. Dont talk on the cell, especially in loud aaf somali

4. Hang out in the cadaan areas but wear a name tag which says "tourist" so the cadaans dont shoot u thinking u r a zulu thug.

5. Dont look your paranoid self!

What do you mean...? This is the 1st World cup in Africa. First WC to be held in Winter. First WC where England will be decent.

I have relatives living in white-dominated areas in Cape Town and they have no complaints. The rest of South Africa is one big warzone, especially if you're Somali.

I'm planning to go there next year for 6 months and I'm limiting my travels there to the Cape and Namibia, Johannesburg is not worth my life.
