Appreciation thread for the Daraawiish
Post what you know or have kept for the Dervish struggle to unite Somali Territories.

"Who is this Mad Mullah, who for eleven years has kept Downing Street on the jump, has sent cold shivers creeping down spines of successive Italian foreign Ministers, and has even caused the Negus at Addis Ababa to turn pale under his pigment? ]The Mad Mullah is a sort of African Washington and Napoleon rolled in one. With a temperamental veneer of Peter the Hermit. Like Washington, he wins his victories by defeats; like Napoleon, he dominates the imagination of his followers. His eleven years war has been like a conflict between a lion and a hawk, in which the lion has finally turned tail and fled.
That was not a satisfactory situation from a financial point of view, nor was it satisfactory from a military point of view. The Mad Mullah became a subject of heated debate in the House of Commons, and it was suggested by a member that $10,000, or even 15,000, a year might be offered the Mad Mullah on condition that he kept quiet. Indeed, Col Swayne was authorized by the Foreign Office to make such an offer.
The Mad Mullah declined to accept the stipend, but he intimated that he would not object to place himself under the Italian protectorate. This was in the Spring of 1902. Italy, however, was loth to harbor such a troublesome guest, so the Mad Mullah went on the warpath again. In 1903-4, first Col. Cobb and then Gen. Sir. Charles Egerton with 8,000 men, including four white regiments, operated against the Mad Mullah. With the exception of a severe thrashing which the Mad Mullah gave Col Cobb’s column Abdullah was always defeated, and in the early part of 1904 Sir Charles had this gratifying news for the Foreign Office:
.. "With the English and Italians now occupying a few towns on the Somali Coast and the Abyssinians far away in the north busy with internal affairs, Haji Muhammad Abdullah apparently has a great unencumbered future before him. A study of his past and of the conditions which sustain his present foreshadows a future of infinite variety and charm.
He has 70,000 men, all of whom are either well trained to modern magazine rifle. He has 10,000 cavalry; he manufactures his own powder and bullets, and is burdened with no commissariat. Fifty-five thousand square miles containing 800,000 Mohammedans are apparently at his disposal. In a word, his possibilities are almost infinite.".......

Re: Appreciation thread for the Daraawiish
The Reconstruction of darwiish and from movement to state
IN ILIG the darwiish forcesor and their followers, who had experienced bad times, found peace and time to recover from the loses in manpower and wealth in the war with the British. Actually, it was nearly a decade later when Sayid Maxamed restarted his campaign to call the jihad against the colonialists. He attracted the loyalty of major clans such as the Warsangeli of the powerful Harti clan, Cumar Maxamuud and Ciisa Maxamuud, both of Majeerteen Harti clans. Since in Islam a man is allowed to marry no more than four wives at a time, to ease his political marriage, Sayid Maxamed had to marry and divorce frequently. These relations opened the way for the Sayid to ask for wife the sister of Maxamuud Cali Shire, the son of the powerful Garaad Cali Shire of Warsangeli, and the sister of Islaan Aadan of the Cumar Maxamuud lineage of the Majeerteen clan as his wives, and indeed, he did marry both women. The alliance of these clans helped Sayid Maxamed to reconstruct his forces. The association with the Warsangeli clan gave him access to Laas Khoray (Maakhergoosh), a door to the Arabian peninsula to import firearms and ammunition. The importation of firearms and ammunition contradicted the Ilig Agreement of 1905 (see bottom).
After four years of fighting, the British expeditions found they could not annihilate the Daraawiish as they had believed. In 1904 because of financial troubles and opposition at home, they had been compelled to change tactics and make peace with the Daraawiish
On the diplomatic front, the Sayid made alliance with the new Abyssinian Emperor, Lij Iyasu, who acceded to the throne in December 1913. Emperor Iyasu was sympathetic to Islam and moved his court to Dire Dawa among his Muslim subjects.[77] He aspired to create a Muslim empire in North Africa. To fulfil his dream he proposed to make alliance with Sayid Maxamed. He probably supplied financial aid and arms to the Daraawiish, and sent a German arms technician, called Emil Kirsch, to Talex to help the Daraawiish movement.
The fear of an alliance of Abyssinian Muslims and the Daraawiish sent shivers through the European capitals as well through the Abyssinian orthodox church. Concern appeared to have been realised with the announcement of Iyasu's conversion to Islam in April 1916.[78] However, before he could consolidate his power, Emperor Iyasu was deposed on 27 September 1916.
On another diplomatic front, Sayid Maxamed made an alliance with the Ottoman empire
1917 the Italians apprehended Sheikh Axmed Shirwac Maxamed and found a document from the Turkish government giving assurance of their support and nominating Sayid Maxamed as the Amir of Somalia.[80] The diplomatic achievements, the Ilig Agreement, the British withdrawal from the hinterlands and the reconstruction of the Daraawiish authority in the heart of the countryhelped enhance the prestige of Sayid Maxamed throughout Somalia

The period in Ilig was, in fact, the period during which he composed his best poems by dexterously using Somali language that is well noted for its richness of vocabulary. Sayid Maxamed was a "literary master
Sayid amazed by the advanced civilization of Harti
Harti nimaan oqoon baa yiraa, hadalka qaarkiise,
Waa nimaan hurmuud wada ah iyo, hanadyo waaweyne.
Waa nimanka haybtoodu tahay, Haashinkaas kore e.
Waa nimanka deeqdii hanbaday, hibo Ilaaheeye,
Waa niman intay hodon yihiin, hoog ku sii daraye,
Waa niman gob baa lagu hirtaa, lagu hagaagaaye.
Waa nimanka daaraha hurdiyo, harac dallaal weyne
Waa nimanka doonyuhu Hindiga,uga himbaartaane
Waa niman haruur iyo bariis, hoyga loo dhigaye
Waa nimanka haanfuuqayee,timirtu hoos taale
Waa niman hingaar lama watee, haybad guursada e
Waa niman hablaha ay qabaan, halalac leeyaane,
Daaroodku waa wada halyey, kalase heyb roone

My fake claim?
So you're saying that I'm not a Majeerteen...
Puntland should stop calling our soldiers...Darawiishta, cause the Darawiish were some dumb niggers from the Dhulbahante clan who followed the Mad Mullah into a trapped hole...not even the Ogaden (His own clan) supported him..
