Somali Islamists chop off hands of Mogadishu 'thieves'

MOGADISHU — Somali Islamists publicly chopped off the right hands of two men in Mogadishu on Wednesday, a sign the hardline Shebab militia is imposing Sharia law in areas of the capital under its control.

"The Sharia court found the two men guilty of breaking into houses and stealing property. They admitted to the charges against them," said Sheikh Abdibasit Mohamed, an Islamic court judge in the north of Mogadishu.

"Therefore each one of them gets his right hand amputated according to the Islamic Sharia."

The two men in their late 20s screamed loudly as the punishment was administered by knife, and were taken to hospital for treatment.

The Shebab fighters barred journalists from taking pictures.

A teenager was also publicly punished, receiving 100 lashes over allegations that he raped a young girl.

The extremist group has imposed strict Sharia in areas of the country that have fallen under its control in months of battles with government forces and African Union peacekeepers.

In June, four people had their hands and feet amputated as a punishment of robbery, but Wednesday's public amputations were a sign of the extremists' growing influence in Mogadishu itself, with diminishing areas of the capital under government control.

"This is an Islamic law and we are all equal before the justice. Anyone found guilty of a crime will face the punishment under the Islamic sharia," said Sheikh Ali Husein, a senior Shebab official in Mogadishu.

Exactly. Two kids marred for life for trying to eat, while a rapist is given only 100 lashes? Shows where these butchers REALLY stand. Especially in regards to women. Appalling.

Where is Sheikh Abdisamed3 so that he can applaud the good work done by his mentors.

Monsters. But you have to remember that the young guys who make up al-Shabaab have been brutalized by a life-time of civil-war, not that this should excuse this kind of injustice.

Is the punishment for rape just a 100 lashes? I thought it was death?

Wallahi that's sad, think about it. Two kids will have a disability for the rest their lives.

Whenever I hear stuff like this I think maybe the Sharia is a little unfair towards women, then I think thats kafir-thought.

Quit worrying about what idiots like Nomad think. There's no such thing as "kafiir thought". What you're thinking is a common sense thought. Lets be real here. It IS unfiar, because after all, look when it was written. I believe ALL religous texts need to be rexamined how they're inplemented in this modern age, with knowing what we know now. Some of it is outdated and irrelevaant nowadays.

Well it looks like the punishment for rape is the same as zinna, death by stoning if the guy is married and 100 lashes if he is not married. The guy also has to pay the girl a meher. However if the rape was done at gun point, knife point, etc. then the rapist should be killed.

But the trauma suffered by the rape victim is supposed to be paramount, not the marital status of the rapist, no?

Expect this bad in Al-Shabaab town near you. Even though it's use is highly criticized in Afghanistan and Pakistan, I'm sure if used in Somalia, the success rate will be much higher.
