Islamic ruling on wearing engagement rings.

Post by ModerateMuslim »

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen was asked about the ruling on wearing engagement rings. He said: The engagement ring is a kind of ring, and there is nothing wrong with rings in principle, unless that is accompanied by some belief, as some people do when the man writes his name on the ring that he gives to his fiancée, and she writes her name on the ring that she gives to him, believing that this will create strong bonds between the couple. In this case, this ring is haraam, because it is an attachment to something for which there is no basis in Islam and which makes no sense. Similarly, with regard to the engagement ring, it is not permissible to the man to put it on his fiancée’s hand, because she is not his wife yet and she is still a stranger (non-mahram) to him, because she is not his wife until after the marriage contract has been done.

I wonder how many people don't touch their fiancée's fingers because they are not married yet. People seem so careless of their religious obligations

But yes yes, all good, engagement/wedding rings have no meaning apart from stating the obvious to any curious onlookers

True. I would lose respect for him if he tries to touch me on purpose, and I'd go as far as calling off the wedding.

It is little things that tell you the character of the other person.

No, no, I don't believe I'm really claustrophobic. But I feel like my blood circulation is stopping when I put on rings. I would be touching my hands all day, twisting and turning the ring. I don't like things to be too tight, I even have problem with the hijab sometimes  I'd have my index finger between the hijab and my throat.

I'm just weird like that.

Wax iga walan in the house!

Mate, the only reason why I put it on is because it looks nice and feminine. I want to be girlish, and put on the girlish accessories.

There is no religious directive prohibiting engagement rings.
