How do you tell a Somali parent...

Post by sexy-kitten »

That his/her kid needs special learning assistance in a nice way in Somali? What would you think their response would be? "Aabahaa wase ma inankeyga yar baa leedahay wuu waalanyahay? Adaa waalan".. No one is saying their kid is crazy, but just a bit slow in learning.

Lie to them and tell them that their kid is gifted and needs special attention just for him.

Be like "Caadi waaye, Somalida oo dhan'ba ilmahooda wii ku jiraan, look at Heblaayo's kid for instance, he's already doing so much better than ur kid"...

Seriously, though, Most Somali parents are simply ill-equipped with handling such response in that they simply don't KNOW what Special Ed is. Much misinformation out there, about abuses in the school systems in that they say that any kid they cant "teach" well, or acts a lil different is a special Ed case. Something about them getting more funding in their districts because of this need? True at times. But unfortunately the ones who really need it suffer as well because of the stigma. Anyway, tell em' about the benefits and they'd understand it better.

Loool      That's suicide haddee.

Honestly speaking, there are some kids who don't need SLD classes. Like kids who just came from Africa or Asia right? Some of these kids are 3rd or 4th grade and never been to school which means they don't know their ABCs and their basic addition. It takes intense training and patience to get these kids caught up. Then again, maybe that's what they need.

Nobleman, that's fucked up if you think about it. They wouldn't listen to me, a fellow Somali yet they'll listen to a cadaan? This is slavery all over again within our own community.
