Yasmin Ashareh had dreamed of becoming a social worker.

But those plans were “abruptly halted” when she was raped and murdered by an HIV-positive man living under the same roof, a Crown attorney alleged Thursday.

William Imona-Russel fatally stabbed the 20-year-old Ashareh only days after she moved into the John Garland Blvd. rooming-house in July 2006, Crown attorney David Fisher said. She planned on attending Sheridan College to study social work in September 2006.

“Yasmin Ashareh was an innocent young woman who found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Fisher said.

Her body, which was concealed inside a hockey duffle bag, was found on July 14, 2006, about 100 metres from the rooming-house. She died from multiple stab wounds to her neck, and a pair of scissors was found buried in her left side, Fisher said. A neighbour was upset when she found the foul-smelling hockey bag and a garbage bag, which attracted flies on her property.

Fisher outlined the prosecution’s first-degree murder case against Imona-Russel, 36. He has pleaded not guilty.

Fisher listed a trail of DNA evidence running from Imona-Russel’s bed where the woman’s blood was found, to the hockey bag, to his semen in her body. His DNA was also discovered on bed sheets and pillow cases — stained with the victim’s blood — in a garbage bag found beside her body, Fisher said.

His DNA was also found on the hockey bag’s handle, Fisher said.

The trial will continue for the next few months

A slaying committed in the context of a sexual assault constitutes first-degree murder, the jury was told.
