Somalia will always be doomed

When the colonizers left, Somalis began to slowly but surely revert back to their basic nature. They never internalized the colonizers' way of life. Tribalism became all too pervasive once again as a way to divide up resources.

Unfortunately Somalia never had enough intelligent people to realize that a free market system, property rights and the rule of law are the best way to divide resources and provide goods and services to a population. Setting up such a system, however, requires a bit of self-sacrifice on members of a nation, a willingness to sacrifice short-term gain for long term benefits. Not enough people in Somalia were intelligent enough to realize this and couldn't forsee the end results of tribal feuding. Or, they really could foresee the end-result of tribal feuding, but they simply didn't care. All that mattered was the here and now. The bad future is tomorrow and tomorrow isn't today so who gives a shit?

The concept of nationalism is a tad too abstract to Somalis, because nationalism requires you to bestow upon strangers the benefits of tribal kinship. Is an ethnic Somali capable of this? Somalis were, for god knows how long they lived in that region of Africa, a group of people competing against each other for resources. They rarely had to unite against a foreign nation, and when the Europeans showed up the immediate concern for Somalis wasn't "How can we unite as a nation against foreigners" but rather "how can my tribe X use these foreigners to my advantage against tribe Y." The big picture was, and is to this today, beyond the grasp of the average Somali.

Educating a Somali does not really do much to help him or her see the big picture. I frequently encounter so called "educated" Somalis who exhibit the same sickness that made Somalia so hellish -- short sightedness, extreme tribalism, general ignorance about the social ramifications of such behavior, etc. And when I come across such a Somali I always despair: if this person hasn't changed his basic behavior and approach to life even after benefiting from Western education, what hope is there for his less educated brethren? There is absolutely no solution. The sickness of Somalia lies in the heart of the Somali people.

Now let's consider a simple possibility: Somalis, and black africans in general, could have evolved differently from Whites/Asians. The group of human beings that left Africa and populated Asia/Europe/Americas are estimated to have done so at least 50, 000 years ago. Consider that -- 50, 000 years separate Somalis/Africans from Whites/Asians. The form of behavior that leads to a flourishing civilization/country could very well be an adaptation that developed in Asia/Europe a long time ago, possibly in the last ice age. You see, in order to to survive in the ice age, people had to exhibit long term thinking. The hunting activity people who lived in the ice age relied on to survive required intelligence -- if you weren't smart enough to hunt, you didn't pass down your genes. Point is, the ice age created a selection pressure for intelligence in Europeans/Asians.

Africans never had to develop that sort of intelligence, though as membes of the species homo sapien, they are quite intelligent, but, unfortunately, not intelligent enough to develop thriving nations in which the rule of law is upheld.

Thus, Somalia will always be doomed. It will never, ever equal a European/Asian nation in terms of wealth/power/well being of citizens. We've lost.

Somalis who live in the West should be thankful everyday that they live in the West and stop fretting about Somalia as if it will ever change.
