One of the biggest critiques of the gaalo against the Muslims is that they may have protected their own Muslim community from the evils of these druglords, but exacerbated the problem for all the non-Muslims in Cape Town. Islam in South Africa is the most diluted form of Islam anywhere. If you want to see a "melting pot" where people really lose their identity and become something else, go to South Africa. 100 years of apartheid did a number in that in place. Tell me why a second generation Pakistani had no concept of pakistan, his ethnic identity, his heritage and even his faith. Name was all focked up pronunciation and his ethnic comprehension was limited to being "colored" and he seemed lost as hell when I said where are you from originally and this was a 40+ year old man. I had the pleasure of being in Capetown during eid and incidentally happened to be in one of the major malls. My relatives in Johannesburg and Cape Town say otherwise, but perhaps it's because the other Muslims they see are newcomer Pakistanis and Arabs like them. I'm sure what you say applies to a great number of Cape Malays and Muslim South Asians who have been living in the Cape since the 17th century when they were brought as slaves by the Dutch.

But most Muslims are ordinary Muslims like everywhere else. In Jo'burg for instance, Somalis were welcomed by the Muslim community in their neighbourhoods and provided assistance and protection for Somali newcomers. Muslims in RSA are a tightknit group with great knowledge of the Deen.
