the self-proclaimed presidents that have declared to rule all or parts of Somali territory but are not recognized by other states. These men are referred to by various names: President of Somaliland, President of Puntland, President of Galmudug, President of Somali Republic etc.


Since their existence is not supported and embraced by Somalis as a whole, they must be nourished by external forces. The main reason why the idea of self-proclaimed presidents/warlords has not disappeared from the scene of Somali politics seem to be that these men have managed to build up support from the locals through propaganda and clan-identity building. In their minds, unless they achieve recognition from both national and International level, they will lay the groundwork for the unleashing of another mooryaan havoc. None of these circumstances, however, is likely to secure the numerous unrecognized presidents a lasting life.
