Depression among Somalis

Post by Lord Diplock »

According to some lunatic Sheikh I know, a practising Muslim CANNOT succumb to depression, 'no such thing as depression' he once told me :?

How rife is this mental disease among our people, especially in the west? and do you know anyone who suffers from it?

Practising Muslims wrote to Muslims scholars from Guantanamo asking them if they could have special permission to commit Suicide. Then again, there is a fine line between having a bad period and depression. All of us go through bad periods, but when does it become depression. I suppose the doctors know best, maybe not.

Depression is a well-documented mood disorder and there's plenty of scientific evidence to support it.

Denying its existence doesn't make it go away.

Maybe the way you understood a practising muslim and what he exactly meant are different. I agree with the sheikh.

There's a lot of ignorance about it in our community and denial. But people fail to understand that the brain can sometimes get ill just like any other organ in the body. Schizophrenia, alzhiemers, mood disorders, cognitive disorders, etc are diseases of the brain. Depression is easily treated with both psycho-therapy and pharmacology (medication). Its mostly as a result of the brain not producing enough neurotransmitters like seratonin and others. Its curable with seratonin uptakes, therapy and lifestyle changes.

Wa wax jiro and it cannot be denied, to deny it is ignorance. These ulema need to be re-evaluated from where they get their cilm from. The rasul did not deny such a thing as depression, but simply gave us the imaan and the knowledge to fight it and to get out of it, and that is what islam is really about, equipping people with the means to fight such things.

You should see this discussion of a team of experts on mental illness including; Kay Redfield Jamison of Johns Hopkins, Elyn Saks of University of Southern California, Jeffrey Lieberman of Columbia University, Helen Mayberg of Emory University, Stephen Warren of Emory University, and Eric Kandel of Columbia University. Two of the panelists are women who over-came schizophrenia and manic depression.

Yeah brother someone who is very close to allah and does all that is expected of him cannot succumb depresion. So maybe that is what the sheikh meant by a practising muslim. Of course he will succumb to other ilnesses but not depression as we know it.

Famous words echoed by a family friend/shekih " you should take your troubles to Allah, and not some psychiatrist".

Thanks a lot.
