Tolomoge Traditional Dance

Post by Lord Diplock »

Called Dhiisow, this dance is peculiar to reer Garissa-Ijaara and is sadly dying out. I used to be in the thick of out when I was a wee boy back in the day

Ever heard about it or seen it before?

This is my mate's wedding in Garissa.

Waryaa Lord,
The video has been removed. I want to see that because Diisoow is one of the unique traditional folklore for Reer Waamo.. It is a warrior dance and they often used to play when they are about whup some azzes. It is not only Tolomoge Dance; it is Absame Waamo traditional dance.

Check the link please, I posted about Diisoow sometime ago.

You are right it is only Waamo affair....The Cawlyahans in Gedo and J/Dhexe and Bakool don't dance to the tune of Diisoow....
Remember the Reer Waamo include the entire NFD Absame.
Why did they take out the link, I would like to see it....
I remember both my grandfather, and great grandfather telling me about the history and richness of Diisoow dance.....
They told me that once the warriors get together and club to the tune of Diisoow, the war is on.....

I remember my late maternal grandfather telling me about the stories of Abudwaak men starting their diisow warrior dance from Garissa area as they marched northwards towards where they had planned a huge battle with Reer Abdille, a famous battle in waamo called 'kalalut', where the 2 warring groups fought to a standstill. Those were the real Absame men, no prisoners were taken.

Even in Garissa, the real masters of the Diisoow are the Abudwaaks (epecially the Reer Guleed) and we (Abdalle) are not that good at it  , but since am half Reer Guleed, I used to attend many aroos where the diisoow was ALWAYs performed

Diisoow xooyee
Abaas kuudaalyow

I like the Diinsoow tune more than Dhaanto...The unfortunate thing is that while Dhaanto is becoming more famous, Diisow is being lost. The good thing is Diisoow has plenty of Dhaanto influence..The rythm sounds very similar....
Here is a video about Diisoow; I am not sure what the event is but it looks amazing even with the video quaility not being great.....
"Nin daganow waan kuu digayaayee" is the chant here.....Still warrior by nature....It is like saying "Motherfocker be aware I am coming atchu"

Theres not one single Dhaanto, theres usually mid dalka ka socota at the time but then theres other versions across the region. If your away from dhulkii for a few years you probably wont recognise the new wave of dhaantoyin sometimes.

Tan waa tu khatara laakiin, ma wardheertaan jeclaa baan ku wareejin wayaaanee
