Local Somali community says they may file complaint against a homicide detective

The last thing you want to do is blame police or see them as your enemy while protecting the drug dealers and the killers.

The local Somali community says it plans to file a complaint against the lead detective in Edmonton's latest murder.

Mahamad Accord with the Alberta Somali Community Centre says it could happen as early as Tuesday.

Accord says he takes issue with comments made by Homicide Detective, Bill Clark that the murder investigation will be shut down unless witnesses start cooperating.

"We are co-operative, but this actually goes to the heart of the complaint against the police, the only thing making judgement in our community. They will not investigate no matter what it is," Accord explains.

He also claims that by suggesting potential witnesses don't want to come forward because they're involved in drug or gang activity, the police are judging the Somali community as a whole.

iNews880 did contact the Edmonton Police Association for comment, but a call was not returned

EDMONTON -- Frustration is mounting among city police investigating the first homicide of the year as several witnesses remain tight-lipped on the identity of the gunman.
"The investigation is going to go nowhere without co-operation. We believe they know exactly who killed this guy and none of them will say," said Edmonton police homicide detective Bill Clark. "If we got co-operation, this one we could easily solve."

Around 3 a.m. Sunday, a 23-year-old man was celebrating the New Year when he was gunned down at the Papyrus Restaurant and Lounge.

Police found the man dead on the floor of the lobby while numerous people were still inside the bar.

A second man, 26, was also shot and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Clark said that man isn't co-operating with police either.

Both men are known to police, who don't believe it was a random attack but aren't saying if it was gang related.

Clark estimates there were at least 100 people in the bar at the time of the shooting
