Commander of the Iranian Army's Ground Forces Brigadier-General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan A prominent Iranian military figure has expressed Iran's readiness to deploy peacekeeping forces to crisis-hit regions across the globe.

Addressing foreign military attachés present at a ceremony marking Iran's National Army Day in Tehran on Tuesday evening, Commander of the Iranian Army's Ground Forces Brigadier-General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said a unit of peacekeepers has undergone rigorous training in the Iranian Army's Ground Force to serve in conflict zones around the world, IRNA reported.

“The Iranian military's Ground Forces will deploy its peacekeeping troops in any region of armed conflict upon foreign ministry's recommendation,” he pointed out.

Pourdastan also noted that international peacekeeping forces, mandated by the United Nations, have been sent to East Timor, Somalia and South Sudan to address the humanitarian and security crises which took place there.

The UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) has been providing security to the tiny southeast Asian island nation and training to local forces.

The UN was first involved more than 10 years ago in helping East Timor to gain independence from Indonesia and in organizing elections to establish a sovereign government.

African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) peacekeepers try to bring back stability to the Horn Africa nation. Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

The UN has 10,000 peacekeepers stationed in Sudan, not counting its joint mission with the African Union in the western province of Darfur. Most of the 10,000 are in the south and in three former civil war battle ground areas, according to Reuters.
