Saudi Arabia moving away from wahabism

Post by union »

JIDDA, Saudi Arabia, Oct. 25 — On a marshy peninsula 50 miles from this Red Sea port, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia is staking $12.5 billion on a gargantuan bid to catch up with the West in science and technology. Between an oil refinery and the sea, the monarch is building from scratch a graduate research institution that will have one of the 10 largest endowments in the world, worth more than $10 billion.

Its planners say men and women will study side by side in an enclave walled off from the rest of Saudi society, the country’s notorious religious police will be barred and all religious and ethnic groups will be welcome in a push for academic freedom and international collaboration sure to test the kingdom’s cultural and religious limits.

This undertaking is directly at odds with the kingdom’s religious establishment, which severely limits women’s rights and rejects coeducation and robust liberal inquiry as unthinkable.

For the new institution, the king has cut his own education ministry out the loop, hiring the state-owned oil giant Saudi Aramco to build the campus, create its curriculum and attract foreigners.

The university will teach evolution.

It is good that the King is moving his nation forward, instead of being pulled back by the desires of backward minds.

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has removed a top cleric who demanded that religious scholars should vet the curriculum at a new flagship mixed-gender university, the state news agency SPA said on Sunday.

The kingdom, a major U.S. ally, is ruled by the Al Saud family in alliance with clerics from the strict Wahhabi school of Islam who oversee mosques, the judiciary and vast parts of education, and run a religious police body.

In a rare move, the king relieved Sheikh Saad al-Shithri of his duties as a member of a top council of religious scholars, citing a royal decree.

The agency gave no reason, but the decision came after Sheikh Saad had said scholars should vet the curriculum at the new King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to prevent alien ideologies such as 'evolution'.
REQUEST DENIED

He should get rid of the whole damn council, but starting with the loud mouthed medieval characters is a good start.

My own personal beliefs are of little consequence to this thread. Evolution is a fundamental principle of science, and no university who wants to be viewed legitimately can refuse to teach it. KAUST is destined to become a premier research university, and not only will they teach evolution, but their large endowment will allow them to pour millions into further research into the field in order to expand human knowledge. Manshallah.

Kudos to the King for giving women the opportunity to an equal education, for allowing science to trump ignorance, and for removing from positions of power jahil individuals who belong in the 9th century.

Evolution is a theory and should be taught as a theory.

Universities teach it like its some sort of doctrine that is fact. They haven't even proven the missing link.
