Why do Somali pseudo-Taliban females wear Tents? Why don't they just wear those civil-looking abaayas instead? Fucked up thing is they always wear their tents in the weirdest colors, like navy blue, maroon and tan and shit. Now I know why Arab countries invest so much money in secret police, they know how awful a sight tent-wearers can be. Somalia doesn't need secret police, it needs fashion police.
From what I know loud colors aren't even allowed to be part of the Hijaab/Jilbaab. It has to be darker colors, not oranges and neon greens.
I always liked the black shuko worn by Baraawe women. They're also worn by Iranians and Bahrainis. Muted black, more tolerable material that had air pockets (that way it doesn't stick to the women), a little clip-on as a face veil, etc. I used to see them in Marka and Baraawe when I was very young, mostly worn by older women, specially the married ones.
Hijaab/Jilbaab is to be admired, but it can come in many ways, provided it meets the religious guidelines.
For Somali women, outward religious appearance is a form of reputation. Its their equivalent to baggy jeans and do-rags. The most tented-out ones are the loudest, meanest, and least patient. In the early days, it took 21 years for the first hudud to be implemented, these days crazy ass Somali women will make a judgment before things even happen. If their piety matched their appearance that's one thing, my problem is that its always the opposite. I see it in my own family. Thankfully we only have one tent-wearer in my family but she's the youngest and hot-headed aunt I have, a nutter, as a human she's a complete wrecking crew, her only redeeming quality is that she raises her kids better than anyone I know, her 7 year old knows algebra - tent wearers are always good parents and I have to know their secret.
