Those are probably land thats being prepared to be built on, those "boxes" make sure they dont get their space/land mixed up with someone elses.

When you buy a plot of land back home you also have to build a small wall around the perimeter of the land; this is so that no one can build on top of your land. It is called sees and without it there would be a lot of land grabbing. :)

Is this guy retarded? Those are lots for which property is built. They're just the urban version of those straw fences that nomads have around their huts.

Also on another note - why do Somalis always have some kind of fencing around their property? I actually like the addition, but its just weird.

Its called a sees (spelling?). People buy land and mark it buy building a sees around it in order to avoid confusion.

It's to ward off crooks. I asked that same question when I first visited back home; they had broken glass glued to the fences so crooks have a hard time trying to climb or jump over the fence. :lol:
