Somali Nationalism

Post by Lord Diplock »

When was the peak of Somali nationalism? the 77 war? the 1960s? before independence? or there has never been a Somali nationalism to speak off and we were always divided into different clans (and sub-clans) and no notion of 'nationalism'?

How can we get it back? do you genuinely care about all Somali people or just your clan members (and deegan)?

When Isaaq's finally with some shrewd maneuvering jostled independence from the british and under some sort of hypnosis thought they could unite under Somalinimo and fell into a pit full of snakes. :som:  :sland:

UIC days were good. When people were going back and kissing the ground when they got there. Whenever there's good news we all feel Somali and when there's bad news we're quick to give up.

Do I care about Somali people? Not more than I care about other Africans. The people I feel for are the poor Somalis who couldn't get out, the internally displaced, the refugees who live in humiliation. Those ones I feel sorry for and if there was something I could do I would. But Somalis in general are a headache I could do without.

Def the 60's and 77. My paternal Grandfather named his daughter (my habo) Banadir after the region, having never gone south of Las canod in his life, but rather on the pride he had for the prospering region around the capital. Also my mum tells me stories of how she use to sing nationalistic war songs when our army was marching well into Ethiopia. Gone pretty much down hill since then
