Its redundant to use but when you are in a situation were on a station the culture is fuelled by currency its pretty reasonable for humans to make alittle money when possible. Especially when so many other cultures / species values it.

A lot of times on Deep Space Nine Quark doesn't have to pay rent but in return Star Fleet can gain access to the holo decks for free like a star ship but any Vulcan love slave programs need to be brought with the latinum. Wealth is only redundant in the Federation.
