Guardiola revives Dream Team's 3-4-3

Post by Mondey »

Pep Guardiola surprised the world of football by choosing a 3-4-3 formation against Villarreal in Barca's debut in La Liga 2011/12 In what seemed to be a return to Johan Cruyff's Dream Team days.

Pep keeps reinventing the team year after year. When he took over, Ronaldinho and Deco left the club as the coach didn't want their bad influence to affect team morale. The result? Messi, Xavi and Iniesta stepped up their game, achieving success from La Masia rather than La Cartera (which means 'The Wallet', Real Madrid style)

Returning to Cruyff's 3-4-3 formation may sound risky but it could prove a hidden, deadly weapon when facing ultradefensive teams at the Camp Nou this season.

"It appears, according to what they say, that the Dream Team returned in Zaragoza, but I believe that the Dream Team has never left.
I am drawn to victory and I realize that the road that gets you the closest to it is leadership. Never think about a game without playing on the opponent’s home turf.”
very interesting read by Pep Guardiola in 2007

The secret with Barca is that almost every starting player is capable of handling the midfield position; from Messi and Sanchez up top to Keita and Alves in the back, this whole squad is play-making oriented, so play a 3-3-4 is not viable or good enough given the new additions and the already crowded personnel, this could make or break this team, we'll see their results against Milan.

Pep's Barca resembles perfection in football.. incredible ball possession, intense pressure if ball is lost, play making from back lines, swift position changes in midfield, top quality players, accurate 20-30 consecutive passes.. etc. and its just getting better each season.
i expecting this 3-4-3 will only increase their ball possession further (80%+) and more goals will be scored. imagine Milan being cornered in 1/3 of their pitch then loses 4-nil

Your right, Barca barely needs to defend if it has the ball most of the time, the only way to beat this team is thru swift counter attacking football 2008 ''dutch'' style and the only teams capable of that in the Champions league are man united, real and maybe inter/man city

Wallahi this is not looking good, Barca is the only thing standing between another CL trophy for Man united, and even though we got better (Young is looking very sharp) Cesc and Sanchez are too much for Sir Alex's boy

The player in front of the centre back does a lot of defensive duties. More defensive work than #4 normally does.

At the end of the day each team has 11 players on the field. 3-4-3, 4-4-2, 4-5-1, all that is nothing more than a mind game and politics played by old man from the touchline.

old Fergie's squad stands absolutely no chance against Barca with a shitty midfield like that (ando, carrick, fletcher). no need to mention he already lost 2 CL finals for the very same team he still insists to go through with his incompetent midfielders! perhaps he got too old to think any better, but he's only a local coach for EPL anyway so why bother hehe.

this shitty formation is still used only by few teams in EPL and not by teams that play modern football.. its too old and outdated
