Djibouti and Ethiopia – partnership for development

Djibouti (SomalilandPress) — The leader of the Djibouti, Ismaïl Omar Guelleh and the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi, held a press conference on Wednesday (15/10/2011) at the Presidential Palace of Djibouti. In the course of this conference following unveiling of plans for enhanced telecommunication and power supply links between the two countries, both leaders reasserted their common will to put their respective countries on the rails of development.

The Ethiopian Premier declared that; “… What has been accomplished by both countries has to act as model in other countries of the region…Our collaboration will not stop here, plans are already advanced for expanding with the network of fiber optics and the building of two modern rail lines which will link up the Harbour of Djibouti and soon that of Tadjourah in Ethiopia.”. Referring to the wider region Meles Zenawi also spoke of similar initiatives involving Kenya and Sudan. No mention was made of a possible tri-partite agreement concerning the strategic port of Berbera involving China, Ethiopia and Somaliland. On the issue of regional security he went on to welcome the Djiboutian contribution to the quest for peace in Somalia.

The Djiboutian President when pressed about the issue of the price of energy in his country admitted that it was proving a strain for every household, but went on to claim that electricity supplied by Ethiopia should see a noticeable drop in energy bills.
