A Question for Waryaa/others who have traveled to Somalia
This is not for people who went to PL, SL, or anywhere north of Xamar.
For those who have traveled to places south of Xamar - like Marka, Kismayo, Gedo, etc.
How did you travel there and what was the hassle like back then and today? Be specific please.
Personally I think a trip anywhere north of Xamar is much easier than south of it. North of Xamar there is really no foreign presence outside the border strip, and you don't have to come through the borders of other countries (Kenya/Ethiopia) to enter, as you would with places like Gedo or the Jubbas where your best point of entry is through Kenya. Another big obstacle would also be the unpredictability of the far south, you don't know if some loose Bantu tribe will kidnap and eat you in Kambooni or Jilib (I'm not joking, this shit happens). At least up north, if I'm traveling through Galguduud or Mudug I know who controls what and how to deal with each group (bribes work here), as opposed to the Jubbas which are a total no-man's land outside of the main cities (who knows if these ppl even take bribes?).
Ideally, lets say I want to go to Kismayo. How would I go about that? Why I'm asking is because in this scenario, I'd prefer to avoid landing in Xamar altogether, preferring instead a route through Kenya. For the moment I can be confident that everywhere between Afgooye and Kismayo are safe because there is no fighting and its controlled by 1 faction. Its the areas immediately outside that safe zone that worry me, like the road from Liboi to Kismayo or from Xamar to Afgooye, where marauding gunmen and wild Bantu jungle people roam. I don't even think I'll get past Xamar, so avoiding it would be nice if possible.
Last thing I want to do is travel in the isbaaro-infested hell that is south Somalia. I'd actually prefer taking a boat from Yemen or Kenya to Kismayo if possible (actually that sounds really good).
I appreciate all answers, thank you for the time.

Contrary to media reports, Mogadishu itself is fine from what my father has been telling us. I don't think you should be scared from going there

Aside from the government "green zone" its a total mess, every in-depth report I've read says that conditions have returned to pre-2006. If it was that easy to just fly from Djibouti to Xamar and drive myself out of the city it would be great but I'll always hold reservations about security in Xamar. I also don't trust AU troops, those guys are trigger happy like all deployed soldiers.

reading and being there are two different things, my dad has videos of himself being driven from one of the city to the other with nothing going around and he hasn't been there in 30 yearsMonk-of-Mogadishu wrote:Aside from the government "green zone" its a total mess, every in-depth report I've read says that conditions have returned to pre-2006. all this hype of xamar being so dangerous is overblown and meant for sensationalism. you gotta be careful of course, but don't be scared.

my dad has cousins there who have been watching over his houses and told him to come. They have cars, not like my dad has one over there they don't got guns either
now quit trolling on my posts and being annoying
here's an email from my dad couple days ago

This is today's headlines@ some websites
(The Somali capital, Mogadishu, has been hit by some of the fiercest fighting in the city in months, in a major setback for the government).
but I did not hear one gun shot all day we went from km4/cassa popular/hodon/shangani and xamar weyn.
Ban ki moon(UN) is landing here tomorrow. so I don't know where they're getting their information.
