A 17-year-old student has given birth to a baby boy in the girls' bathroom of her school.
The teenager had been in class at Streamwood High School in Chicago when she left to go to the bathroom on Tuesday morning.
Soon after, a member of staff in the hallway had heard screams coming from the toilets and alerted police officer Steve Kisch who is assigned to the school.
Officer Kisch received the call at around 9.20am on his radio, Streamwood Deputy Chief Jim Gremo told triblocal.com.
He was told to find the school nurse and to call paramedics because a student had been found delivering a baby in the bathroom.
When the officer arrived at the third floor bathroom, the student was sitting on the toilet, holding her baby boy, Gremo told triblocal.com.
John Heiderscheidt, safety coordinator for Elgin-based School District U-46 said he could not say if school staff knew the student was pregnant.
'Paramedics came in, took care of her and the baby and got them out swiftly and without interruption,' Heiderscheidt told the Daily Herald.
The student and her baby were taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates and were both said to be doing well.
During the incident, the school was put on a 'medical lock down' which kept students and staff in classrooms while the mother and baby were escorted out of the building, Heiderscheidt told triblocal.com.
Heiderscheidt, who has worked in the district since 2006, said he had never come across a student delivering a baby at school.
'I'd say this is pretty rare.' he told the Herald.
