Insults scrawled on Concord home

CONCORD, N.H. - Hateful words and insults were found written in marker over the weekend on a Concord home where an African refugee family lives, police said.

Police said the message scrawled on the home suggests the family is in the country illegally, but officials said they came to the country legally from Somalia.

"I never make any problem with the other people, and I don't know why they wrote that on my house," said a woman who lives in the home who asked not to be identified.

The message written in black marker referred to the family as "Third World scum" and "primitive beasts," suggesting that they be deported.

The mother of seven said she tries to tell her children not to worry.

"I just keep saying, 'Don't worry about that,'" she said. "I keep saying, 'Maybe kids wrote it. Don't worry.'"

The woman said her family has lived in Concord for eight years after fleeing Somalia.

"We have reason to believe that based on their culture and their race, this was targeted at them specifically," said Lt. Timothy O'Malley.

O'Malley stopped short of calling it a hate crime but said it clearly borders on one. Neighbors said they were shocked by the message, which has since been removed.

"They are nice neighbors," said neighbor Jean Tewksbury. "They haven't done anything to hurt the neighborhood."
