The President names the PM. That is the extent of his influence on the man. He can't confirm him, fire him, decide for him ministers, decide for him legislative issues, etc. This is why it is imperative for the President to pick a man he can work with; because the Constitution clearly defines the President and Prime Minister roles and the shorter end is with the president.
