European Union Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Post by ElfRuler »

The European Union has been awarded the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize in a nod to the 27-member bloc's "advancement of peace and reconciliation," and to applaud its solidarity as it continues to work to contain the debt crisis hanging over the euro zone.

The head of the Norwegian committee, Thorbørn Jagland, said the committee gave the award in an effort to encourage Europe to back away from the "extremism and nationalism" that led to major conflict in years past. "This is, in a way, a message to Europe to secure everything we have achieved and move forward," he said while addressing a packed crowd at the Nobel Norwegian Institute in Oslo on Friday.

"We don't have a position on how to solve the economic crisis, but we believe it will be important to solve it and that European unity can be kept so that Europe can move forward. There are many things to say about the economic crisis—where it originated, for instance. Actually, it started in the U.S. and all of us had to deal with it.

"Mr. Jagland said it is "up to the European Union" to decide what to do with the approximately $1.2 million in prize money that comes with the award. He also said the EU should decide how the award is ceremonially received.

Some other news: Bernard Madoff Investment Securities has not won the Nobel prize in economics yet. :(

The good news: Europe, for the first time in history, has a positive $1.2 million in equity value from the prize money, which is also the cash which will be promptly spent to fill those 0.0x fiscal (and monetary) multipliers of a failed regime, aka fill Belgian caterers' pockets.

The bad news: there is no Nobel prize for biggest Ponzi scheme conceivable, which would logically come with a prize so large even Spain would be saved. For at least one day.

We have reached out to the TOTUS to ask him how he feels that an endless monetary black hole - one he personally will be tasked with bailing out should he win the reelection - is now proudly carrying the peace torch for at least one year

I was laughing when I read this...

The unity among EU countries has not been good since the economic crisis. So the only way to re-establish the unity or atleast makes things better is to hand over the Nobel Peace Prize to the EU. This Prize lost its meaning many years ago, so its not a surprise.

The Nobel Peace Prize is becoming a joke.

Why the sad face next to the Madoff line?

Since you seem to be into economics do you lean more Keynesian or Friedman?

Europeans have a fake sense of unity and pride. Every time the economy goes in flames they wage a war unknown to mankind and kill millions of people in a short amount of time, and amass billions in resources. We all know what they did during the first and second World Wars. I would hate to see their attempt to outdo themselves in the art of mass-murder once again. The economic welfare of Europe was an incentive for them to unite and gain wealth collectively, however, now that some Europeans nations such us Spain, Ireland, Greece, etc are not profiting from the economic success of the EU, they are more likely to turn to their origin tribal-cave-mentality of "Unga bunga wunga. Oog, Grog no more happy"

Greece should go back to their Drachma and stick the middle finger to Germany and France. The Euro is further killing their economy and they'll never be able to pay back those debts and the austerity measures are comparable to that of the Treaty of Versailles.

Madoff was one insane bastard! His actions were shocking and impressive well. It's unfortunate that the EU which is a bigger fraud wins a Noble Peace Prize, while Madoff is prosecuted.

My professor mainly taught Friedman and adored Friedman's Chicago economic gang. I'm beginning to read more about Keynesian economics, and so far I hear they are about to bite the dust.

Yea my professors for the most part were all conservative economist. Couple were actually from the University of Chicago themselves, and one in particular absolutely trashed Keynes.

Too bad I barely remember everything I learned

Elf, are you from the states?

My favorite Econ professor was one serious provocative conservative as well. I barely agreed with his methods, but his teaching style was perfect. He would take japs at everything that is liberal and all the liberals would change colors. I remember going to his office and the old tard had a "Terrorist shooting Permit". The poor fellow had an heart-attack ones, and I remember putting my "Get-Well" Card right next to his Terrorist permit.

I don't remember as much either, but the concept mainly remained with me.

I'm from the states.

Now that I think about it, I don't think I had a single professor who wasn't a conservative economist, which is funny, because I went to a fairly liberal institution. Well at least when it came into the higher up courses, the intro level courses, the professors didn't discuss anything worthwhile.

Economist are some of the few people that could justify cheap labor with a straight face. They believe in incentives and disincentives, and not to forget the notion that humans are rational human beings that choice the best of what they are offered.

Did you ever hear Attenborough's statement at the beginning of RSA videos?

“Anyone who believes in indefinite growth on a physically finite planet is either mad, or an economist.”

The could be the reason why Republicans are hell bent on claiming that they're in the process of "enlarging" the pie, instead of dividing the pie into equal pieces. They would rather try to create new wealth to help the poor (which takes more resources, time, and effort) than adequately use the wealth that already exists in the system. They excuses to always accumulate and amass disproportionate wealth never dies. I would have probably came out an evil human being had I went into economics in depth.

At the end of the day, you can't make something out of nothing. We've been doing it for a while, but it will all come down crashing. The housing market crashed, because housing prices were going up very high, but salaries were not, the results was the housing crisis which lead to more of the economic recession. We've been trying to make something out of nothing, and sooner or later it will backfire and collapse on itself.

Republicans idea is that if they tax less, people and businesses will use that money saved from taxes for investments which will create more jobs, more people will go to work, get off benefits and pay taxes It works if businesses really do put that money into that kind of activity and create jobs. However in recent times, companies haven't been doing that, and if they have it's been putting jobs in other countries. Case in point Apple.
