Mogadishu's Coca Cola plant resumes operations

The management of the Coca Cola Company in the Somali capital Mogadishu announced on Monday a restart of its operations. The plant has been dysfunctional over a number of years.

Briefing the media at the plant along the Industrial Road in North Mogadishu, Mr. Mohamed Hassan Awale, The Managing Director of Mogadishu Coca Cola Company, stated that the company has cleared plans to resume production after being out of the market for nearly six years.

“We planned to reengage the old system as well as introducing new lines,” said Mr. Awale. He added that diverse soft drinks will be produced.

The director urged the shareholders to renew their shares by wiring them through local banks, namely Dahabshiil and Salama Somali Bank.

“The company will have a lean management team,” remarked Mr. Awale.

Opened in 2004, the Mogadishu Coca Cola Company sold diverse products in the Somali capital and in upcountry regions. However, the director stated that since 2006 the closure cost the factory 52% of its assets.

In May, Coca Cola Company opened an ultra-modern plant in Hargeisa city, the capital of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland, 1500 km northwest of Mogadishu.

According to reports released, the new plant cost $15 million and considered as the largest single investment in the breakaway republic. The management of the Hargeisa plant announced that it was going to generate 135 direct employments as well as thousands of indirect jobs
