The name Fartun is a result of Italian colonialism

I was intrigued by how close the name sounded to Fortuna, the Roman Goddess of luck. Add to this the fact that I have never seen females from any other ethnicity bearing that name.

A quick search confirmed my hunch. It is indeed related to Fortuna and we borrowed it from the Romans via the Italian word Fortunato meaning luck.

So Fartun means lucky one!

I wonder how many ''Somali'' names have an Italian origin.
