So the question is when did we lose our backbones - or are we just simply witnessing a failed generation. - And is times changing with us observing the re-birth of a nation...

I think we've done things for thousands of years our own way but after being colonized by Europeans, we've struggled to find our way. We seemed to be more independent, in my opinion, in the hopeful years following independence. But forcing a nation that has always had something like a confederacy for a majority of its history to fit the mould of a nation-state (as was defined by the Europeans/Westerners following events unique to the Europeans) is ignorant and shows the deeply rooted Eurocentric mindset that prevails when it comes to nations of any continent and international affairs. Nations should have the right, as part of their sovereignty, to decide what form their government(s) will take. We shouldn't have to bow down to the results of European history/politics and try to live up to their standards of how a country should be run.

Ranted a little there but it is astounding how Eurocentric discussions on nations are, and most people don't seem to acknowledge this.

I didn't know Siad Barre and Abdhullahi Yusuf was Hawiye

I didn't know the gov up to 1991 was Hawiye run either

I didn't know hawiye was the biggest helpers to the Italians and the british too

Abdullahi Yusuf is Darod (MJ to be specific). Siad Barre was Darod too, specifically Marehan. I don't think that the Hawiyes had much to do with the British... from the books that I've read written by the British around colonial times, they mostly had good relationships with individuals that came from Dir (Isaaq, Issa, etc).
