Somalia:President Farole meets with EU Director for Cooperation
Ms. Francesca Mosca European Commission Director for Cooperation for Sub Saharan Africa met with Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole, Garowe Online reports.
Ms. Mosca leading a EU delegation met with President Farole and Vice President Abdisamad Ali Shire, Minister of Interior Abdullahi Ahmed Jama Ilkajir, Minister of Education Abdi Farah Juha and other government officials in Garowe at the new presidential palace compound.
The officials discussed security, development, Somali Federal Government (SFG) and state cooperation, democratization and the upcoming Somalia “New Deal” conference scheduled for September in Brussels.
The two officials held a press conference after their meeting. President Farole spoke about some of the talking points in Wednesday’s meeting.
“The aid structure for Somalia has changed since Somalia has transitioned into a Federal Government and we discussed how that new structure would be implemented,” said President Farole.
Ms. Mosca who had been in Mogadishu on Tuesday meeting with Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon, said that Puntland was an “important region for our support”, and briefly discussed the new deal conference.
“The new deal arrangement between donors and Somalia as a whole will determine the priorities for Somalia so that the donors can help fulfil these priorities,” said Ms. Mosca.
After President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited Brussels in January, EU officials pledged a new economic and political support program for Somalia following the “New Deal” conference scheduled for September 16.
