Al-Jazeera English to be cut off in the USA on August 20th

Al Jazeera America launches and the Al Jazeera English stream will be cut off and a geoblock will be put in place to block people in the US from watching Al Jazeera English as well.

NEW YORK -- When Al Jazeera America launches in a few weeks, U.S. fans of Al Jazeera English who currently watch it livestreamed online or on cable will no longer be able to.

"The Al Jazeera English stream will no longer be available in the U.S. as soon as Al Jazeera America goes live," an Al Jazeera America spokeswoman told HuffPost on Friday, confirming news first reported Thursday night by Max Blumenthal on the website Mondoweiss.

The spokeswoman also said Al Jazeera English will no longer be available on TV in cable markets where the network has made deals with local channels, such as in New York City.

Cable distributors frown upon networks livestreaming their broadcasts and it was reported when Al Jazeera purchased Current TV in January that the forthcoming, U.S.-based network Al Jazeera America would not be available for free online. The Wall Street Journal reported on plans to stop streaming Al Jazeera English online in the U.S. as well when Al Jazeera America launched in April. But when that launch was delayed until Aug. 20, it was no longer clear whether executives still planned to cut the livestream for the Doha-based Al Jazeera English, a go-to destination for U.S. viewers craving international news.

While it had initially been reported that roughly 40 percent of Al Jazeera America's programming would originate from Al Jazeera English, that's no longer the case as the Aug. 20 launch approaches. Each network will have its own programs, hosts and White House correspondents, and they have different focuses as well. The American network, which has a number of former CNN stars and executives on staff, will cater to an American audience, while the English-language network should remain geared toward an international, English-speaking viewership.

The issue of ending the broadcast of Al Jazeera English in the U.S. has been source of tension within the organization. Al Jazeera host Marwan Bishara raised concerns in an internal email, along with worries that Al Jazeera America would be less hard-hitting journalistically than the Arabic and English networks.

"Does the fear of contractual obligations with carriers etc. mean it's necessary for some to do whatever they want with Aljazeera, including banning AJE altogether from America and web livestream,” Bishara asked executives in the email obtained by The Guardian.

When HuffPost recently asked interim Al Jazeera America chief executive Ehab Al Shihabi about the Al Jazeera English livestream, he signaled it might be cut off because of deals with cable providers. He said that if viewers "want Al Jazeera English, they can contact the cable operators to demand Al Jazeera English.”

That's easier said than done. Despite winning over many U.S. viewers during the Arab Spring, Al Jazeera English executives had trouble convincing cable operators to carry the network due to negative connotations and lingering perceptions of anti-American bias left over from the Bush years. Indeed, that’s why the Al Jazeera Media Network spent $500 million on Current TV in order to quickly gain access into tens of millions of homes.

The American version will be completely different, it will be dumbed down and full of misinformation, If I lived in America I'd stick to watching the original Aljazeera online.

Al Jazeera bias is worse than Fox News. They only go live for like a few hours a day; that whole channel is a re-run. Anyone noticed how their programs like Power and People and the Stream came on like 3 or 4 times every 24 hours? They don't seem to be funded well despite the fact they are owned by the Qatari government.

With that being said, I do enjoy their international coverage. Very original.

Al Jazeera English is being cut off. Al Jazeera America is launching on the now defunct Current TV on the same day.

I like their international coverage too. What news organization isn't biased though? :MJ: Their biases were so apparent couple years back to me and I was just :russ: at how nikkas wasn't hiding their enthusiasm on air seeing these leaders get deposed one by one. The wall to wall coverage was great despite that though.

Every news organization is biased but the way Al Jazeera works with their bias is next level. What is scary about this channel is that these guys literally have the power of deposing leaders. And as you said, they jump up and down when that occurs. They were literally the force behind the Arab Spring. Could CNN or the other media outlets ever imagine of ever carrying out something like that of the Arab spring in the U.S? Never.

It's a dangerous channel. These people carry out multiple revolutions at once at the behest of the Qatari government. It's madness.

 its crazy, but they got some good content. It's not the dumbed down crap we have on cable news at the moment.

The Qataris and their $$$ is insane.

Al Jazeera English is now officially cut off from the United States. Can't even watch their YouTube videos either.

Only way to get around is a VPN proxy.

Why are they doing this?

Its very strange. Apparently due to their contracts with various cable companies, those companies do not want Al Jazeera streaming anything for free online.

But, Al Jazeera America is only going to be available to 40 million households and not on all cable channels. Plus, Al Jazeera English is a completely different channel even though they'll share perhaps a couple programs.

So they are cutting off Al Jazeera English from being streamed here... but I can still watch Al Jazeera Arabic on Livestation, YouTube, or Fomny no problem.

Ah, so it is because of business interests, nothing political? Hmm.. Seems odd.
