How common is this

Post by Rabshoole »

Is their something in your family ad ka caagantahiin ?
-
for example, beer, calooley, kilyo were the choice of food that had something to do with the death of my greatX15 grandfather, since then its been passed down from generation to generation to aviod eating those foods, just the other day I over heard my older sibling telling his kids to not eat it if their mother cooks it, almost everyone except my mother eats it, all of my reer adeer including my siblings and I don't eat it.
-
Just out of curiousity how common is this tradition ? anyone else have similar practices that might be out of the norm ?

Yes. There is something my father believes with absolute conviction, I think it's superstition but he would flip out if any of us ever did it. Lakin it's just him and I don't think it will be passed on to our kids. Who knows though when you hear something for XXL number of years it goes into your psyche.

I thought it was some weird practice for the longest when my siblings and I would tell my extend family waan ka caaganahay beer iyo waxaad soo wadaan during EID breakfast gatherings. I would get the awkward response like "nigga this ain't pork" I be like "I'm good, it's a long story got anything else?". :Heh:

Good to know its very much common to some extent.

Very common among many Somali families I have come across. But in our family, my paternal grand parents never ate a certain part of goat meat, not sure what it is called in particular but whenever goat was slaughtered in the house, I used to hear my grandmother say " Lafta tagoogta naga bixiya". And at times if the meat is bought she would make sure it is not cooked. She used to throw it. None of us cared about it though.

I don't get this, so your greatx15 granfather died from eating kiliyo iyo beer that's why you don't eat it :?

That's basically it, those were three foods he ate during his last day on earth, since they don't know which food killed him, all three should be avoided, everyone on my dad's side, don't eat it. Its more so a superstition than anything.
