Fear Grips Residents As Somali Beggars Flood Enugu

Residents of Enugu, the capital of the Coal City State, are now living in fear following the influx of suspected beggars from war-torn Somalia.

Our investigations revealed that the Somalia indigenes roam the streets of Enugu daily begging for alms.

One of them told our correspondent that they ran away from Somalia because of the ongoing war in that country. He pleaded with him to give him money to enable him eat.

But, most residents of Enugu who spoke to LEADERSHIP said that they were not sure that the beggars came from Somalia, alleging that some of them might have escaped from Boko Haram camps.

“We are afraid over the presence of this people. They look like Boko Haram members who escaped from camps because of the declaration of state of emergency.

“The security agencies should swing into action and unravel the real identities of the beggars. I believe it is very important to know the identities of the beggars,” a resident who identified himself as Chinonso said.

Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, called on security operatives to monitor the activities of the beggars strictly.

“ I ‘m not asking the police to send them back to Somalia if they find out that they are from that country but I want them know the identities of these people. The government can keep them in a refugee camp because of the insecurity challenges confronting the nation,” he said.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Enugu State Command, Ebere Amaraizu said that the command would make enquiries to know if the beggars were indeed from Somalia.

He also promised to contact the Nigerian Immigration service to find out if they were legal immigrants or not.

It is very bad to be Somali. Everyone blames Somalis for problems in their city. Forget Europe or America, now Nigeria thinks that these new beggars in their country are from Somalia. SMH

Even the Gypsies are reportedly concerned, and with a good reason, that we will give them a bad name. We, Skinnies, have the exclusive property rights, and long may we retain it, at the Bottom of Humanity's Cesspool.

Horta when you type, do you just pluck "facts" out of your arse? Nigeria's gdp per capita is about $1500, that is less than 3 times Somalia's (no accurate figures can be estimated for obvious reasons) who have had no government in 2 decades and I'm sure it's even less impressive when compared to SL's. That is what qualifies it as a shithole. Their are many countries with high GDPs because of high Populations e.g. India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam etc. I wouldn't want to live in any of them even if you paid me.

My point was how and why would a Somali travel halfway across Africa to reach Nigeria, specifically, when there more obvious and better routes to more developed countries like in Europe, the gulf and SA?

Economic powerhouse yet they are indebted to financial instuition loan sharks with almost all sectors privatized and macromanaged. ofcourse, with the usual rhetoric that the macro level economics would trickle down to the micro level which it never does. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is yes it is economically rich but the disparity between the production/capital owners and the ordinary people is mindblowing. Rich state but you wouldn't think so if you lived there.

atleast in Somalia the slate is generally equal in terms of living standards. Heck, with the power of remitance coming into the country, the people can be assumed to be middleclass in regards to the WB poverty line.

Nigeria is improving and a viable place to live for the mos part.

Also it's not in debt to the IMF, it hasn't been for a decade.

Nigeria has one of the biggest pop in the world i think 8th. Its GDP is lower because it has 20* larger pop than Somalia. Your argument is put to rest. Very futile actually.
Those countries you've listed will is where your beloved Europeans are running too.
I don't think you actually realize how developed Africa and Asia are ?

The same exists in London, New york and Paris. If you want details ask.
Income inequality exists all over the world. Africans and Arab is just more visible.

You haven't refuted a single thing I've said. Nigeria is a hundred times richer than Somalia yes (actually 50 times), Nigerians on average are just as poor though. Like I said, their GDP is due to their huge population, not due to productivity. If you want a more visible proof;
if the population of Somalia was the same as Nigeria's, that is 168 million people, then the gdp estimate of Somalia would be about (given the gdp per capita of Somalia is anything from $700-$1000) anything from $118 to 168 billion dollars. And this with a more two decade long civil war and no government.

PS their GDP is not $500 bil but about half of that. Next time, if you want to argue for the sake of it at least come with something coherent.
