Somalia: Federal Gov ‘requests postponement’ of Somaliland talks

MOGADISHU, Somalia Jan. 6, 2014 (Garowe Online) - Officials say Somalia’s Federal Government has requested a temporary postponement of an ongoing process with the separatist region of Somaliland, Garowe Online reports.

Somaliland’s foreign minister Mr. Mohamed Bihi Yonis told local media on Sunday that a Somaliland delegation planned to travel to Turkey for talks with Somali Federal Government but the delegation postponed its trip.

“Federal Government requested that the meeting in Turkey is postponed, and we were contacted by the President [Hassan Sheikh Mohamud], requesting to postpone the meeting until the new Somali Prime Minister nominates the Council of Ministers,” said Minister Bihi, speaking to reporters in Hargeisa, capital of separatist region of Somaliland.

Minister Bihi said the Federal Government and Somaliland agreed to meet in Turkey at the end of this month to resume the dialogue process.

Somali President Hassan nominated Dr. Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed as Somalia’s new Prime Minister in December 2013.

Somaliland, located in northwestern Somalia, unilaterally declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been recognized internationally.

Weele Somali politics is hella funny, SNM rebels went from daily insults on Hawiye, and evening distancing themselves as far as being closer to Christian Amxaaro than the Muslim Somali Hawiyes in Xamar.
